A portrait needs to capture and reveal something of the essential character of the subject. Photographers also need photographs of themselves, and those are usually taken by other photographers. This image was going to be used in the photographer’s promotion, so it needed to reflect his sensibilities as a photographer so that it would fit in with his work. Adjusting exposure selectively and desaturating background elements to create an engaging image of the photographer that would fit in nicely with his work.
